The Bird House
There is a buzz in the Exeter air at the moment. And you might assume that the buzz is about some of the city’s massive developments – St Sidwell’s Point or the Sandy Park hotel perhaps, but for us, right now, it’s also all about community and particularly the soon to open Birdhouse café in Pinces Gardens, St Thomas.
The Birdhouse will be recognisable to many of you. This pretty, former gatehouse sitting proudly in the green space of Pinces Gardens has been ignored for some years, and it was during lockdown in 2020, that local resident Abbe Martin had the idea to turn it into a community space and café.
She says: “This is a brand-new venture. It’s been planned for a couple of years but Covid, the presence of bats and a newborn baby took over!“
Abbe has lived in Exeter her whole life, so is the perfect person to set up a venture like this. She understands her community, recognises what people want and need, and appreciates all of the great things that our city has to offer.
Abbe told us: “I think Exeter is ideally located - the moors, the beaches, woodland and a thriving city. I also think it’s a great arts hub - there is always live music, theatre shows, street art, craft markets or something fun happening.”
The café is due to open any day now and Abbe told us a little about what people can expect once it opens the doors.
She said: “The Birdhouse is set in a quiet hidden conservation area in Exeter opposite a beautiful wisteria walkway. Grab a coffee, lay out a picnic blanket and listen to the birdsong. We all need a base, someone to chat to, a place that feels safe …. and a good coffee!”
Abbe says that the Birdhouse also has two rooms which will be available to hire for small groups or parties and she’s already had interest from counsellors, massage therapists, storytelling groups and parent and baby groups.
